Transcript Requests for Pro Se Litigants

The short answer

You do not need a lawyer to order an official court transcript. We prepare certified transcripts for self-represented litigants every week, we explain each step in plain language, and in most cases we request the hearing audio from the court for you.

If you are representing yourself, the transcript process can feel like it was designed for insiders. Court websites talk about designations, approved transcribers, and deposit fees without explaining any of it. Meanwhile your appeal or motion has a deadline attached.

Here is the plain version: court proceedings are recorded, a certified transcriber turns that recording into the official transcript, and you are entitled to order one in your own case. That is what we do, and we are approved providers in courts around the country.

What the process looks like for you

First, fill out our order form with your case number, the court, and the hearing date you need. If you are not sure of the exact date, we can help you narrow it down. Second, we request the audio and paperwork from the court, estimate the length, and send you a quote with a secure payment link for the deposit. Third, we transcribe, proofread, and certify the record, then email you a searchable PDF you can print or file.

You pay by the page, and one hour of court audio usually comes to about 45 pages. The deposit is paid up front by card or e-check, and turnaround time starts when the deposit arrives.

Straight answers about cost

Transcripts are priced per page at rates that vary by court and turnaround. A short hearing is a small transcript; a full trial day is a large one. Use the estimator on this site to see roughly what your audio length will cost at a given rate before you order. If money is tight, the slower turnaround tiers cost less per page than expedited ones, and we will always quote you before work begins.

What to have ready when you order

  • Your case number, from your court paperwork
  • The name of the court and the county or district
  • The date of the hearing you need transcribed
  • The judge's name, if you know it
  • Your deadline, if a court has set one
  • An email address where you can receive the PDF

FAQ

Questions we hear

Am I allowed to order a transcript without an attorney?

Yes. Parties in their own cases order transcripts all the time, and courts expect pro se litigants to do so for appeals.

I don't know how long the hearing was. Can you still quote me?

Yes. When we request the audio from the court we learn its exact length, and we confirm the estimate with you before transcription starts.

Will this transcript be accepted by the court?

Yes. We are certified transcribers, our staff hold AAERT credentials, and we are approved providers in courts around the country. The transcript we certify is the official record.

Can you help me figure out what I need for my appeal?

We can explain the transcript side: which hearings you likely need, what they will roughly cost, and how the ordering works. For legal strategy you would need an attorney, but you will not be left guessing about the record.
